A literary memoir about creativity, contradiction, and the courage to keep rebuilding
One image per discipline — twenty years of making
Things I Burned Down to Build is a literary memoir about a woman who gradually discovers that the force she has spent her life trying to control — her tendency to destroy and rebuild — is not her greatest flaw but the foundation of her creativity.
Growing up in Vienna between two radically different parents, she learns to live inside contradiction. Her mother is disciplined, practical and deeply religious; her father is charismatic, extravagant and impulsive. One believes in order, the other in intensity. Rather than choosing between them, she absorbs both worlds, and contrast becomes the organising principle of her life.
As a young architecture student, she falls in love with an Italian man and moves to Italy, where she builds a family, learns a new language and creates a new identity. When that life ends, she returns to Austria with two children and begins rebuilding again. Over the following years she repeatedly reinvents herself — as entrepreneur, designer, artist, athlete, teacher and writer — each new beginning emerging from the ashes of the previous one.
Searching for meaning, she pours herself into art, endurance sports and obsessive correspondence, writing 2,190 emails to a coach who eventually disappears from her life without explanation. The loss becomes a turning point. She realises she has been asking people to carry what only a creative practice can hold.
Through morning writing, meticulous observation and an unusual ability to recognise patterns, she begins extracting universal principles from the details of ordinary life. Her father's impossible behaviour, her mother's volcanic arguments, raising four children, collaborations with artists, and thousands of mornings spent writing all reveal the same truth: identity is not something we discover but something we repeatedly construct.
The memoir gradually shifts from autobiography to philosophy. Each chapter transforms a lived experience into a broader reflection on creativity, systems, memory, language, relationships and making meaningful work. She discovers that fire can illuminate as well as destroy when it is placed on the right surface.
Things I Burned Down to Build is ultimately an invitation for readers to see their own lives differently — not as a sequence of successes and failures, but as raw material from which a more authentic life can continually be built.
